Tor vs proxy

Tor vs proxy.png The Great IllusionThumbnailsFirst attempt in learning - Be PositiveThe Great IllusionThumbnailsFirst attempt in learning - Be PositiveThe Great IllusionThumbnailsFirst attempt in learning - Be Positive

A chart to explain the difference between Tor and a simple proxy or VPN:

Case 1: no proxy:
- Bob sees Alice's IP
- Internet Service Provider (ISP) sees Alice connected to Bob
- ISP sees data exchanged between Alice and Bob if no HTTPS

Case 2: proxy or VPN:
- Bob sees VPN's IP
- ISP sees Alice connected to VPN
- VPN sees Alice connected to Bob
- VPN sees data exchanged between Alice and Bob if no HTTPS

Case 3: Tor:
- Bob sees one or more IPs of Tor exit nodes
- ISP sees Alice connected to Tor network
- Exit node sees _someone unidentified_ connected to Bob
- Exit node sees data exchanged between someone unidentified and Bob if no HTTPS

Conclusions:
1) Using a simple VPN/proxy just moves the trust issue: instead of trusting your ISP, you are trusting your VPN just as much
2) If you don't use HTTPS, someone will always be able to see what you do (only one exception if we stay in cases covered by this chart: Tor hidden services)
